VIP Questions & Answers (See information about PnC E-mail, our new e-mail program)

Q. How do I write and send e-mail?

From Home, press 9 for More, press 9 for Internet, then press 7 for Email. Press Enter to start writing a new e-mail.

Q. How do I put an address from the Address Book into the e-mail I am writing?

From the e-mail editor, press Alt + 7, and then press 9 for Address, select the address you want with the 4 and 6 keys, then press the 8 key.

Q. How do I reply and forward e-mail?

From the Inbox list press 7, then press 1 to Reply or 3 to Forward.

Q. What is the difference between reply and forward?

When you press 1 for Reply, VIP puts you in the e-mail editor with the sender's address and the subject already filled in. All you have to do is write the reply message to the sender.

When you press 3 for Forward, VIP puts you in the e-mail editor with the sender's message and the subject already filled in. All you have to do is fill in the address that you want the message forwarded to.

Q. How do I change my dial-up phone number?

Many of our VIP users are using Earthlink as their Internet Service Provider.

It is easy to change the dial-up access phone number from within the VIP if you are using "or Dial this phone number" as a way to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

From the HOME screen of VIP:

1. Press 9 for More.

2. Press 9 for Internet.

3. Press F5 to access the advanced setup screen.

4. Update the phone number of "or Dial this phone number" to the correct phone number.

Note:
If you are not using the option of "or Dial this phone number" and wish to use it, move mouse over to the text of "or Dial this phone number" and click on it. In addition to the local access phone number, you will also need to enter both the username and password of your dial-up account.

5. Press ESC key to exit the advanced setup screen to have the new number to take effect.

By the way, we have always liked to use the "or Dial this phone number" option to help our users to setup their Internet dial-up connections.

Q. How can I correctly identify myself in VIP e-mail?

(Have your full name, not your e-mail address displayed in the FROM part of your VIP e-mail.)

From the HOME screen of VIP:

1. Press 9 for More.

2. Press 9 for Internet.

3. Press 7 for e-mail Boxes.

4. Press F5 for advanced setup screen.

5. Move cursor over to the edit box of Reply To and click the left mouse button.

6. Enter YOUR FULL NAME <YOUR REPLY TO ADDRESS>. See example below for more details.

7. Press ESC key to exit the advanced setup screen.

The text in the edit box of the Reply To is the Form part of your e-mail to the recepient. Normally, you only need to enter your e-mail address. To add additional description to it, first enter the description and then your return e-mail address. You will need to enclose the e-mail address with < and > signs.

For example:

To display both full name and e-mail address, enter YOUR FULL NAME <yourhandle@yourISP.com>. Note that in this example, the e-mail address is enclosed within the < and > signs.

To display just your e-mail address, enter yourhandle@yourISP.com. In this case, the < and > signs are not needed.

Q. How to display my full name in addition to your e-mail address on your outgoing e-mails.

The method that we described about adding description to the Reply Address of your outgoing e-mail field does not work with your Internet Service Provider, but it does work with some Internet Service Providers, such as Netcom that we use at JBliss. At the present, there is no work around for you, but we will keep this in mind for the next e-mail program that we plan to do.

To put it simply, the VIP e-mail program should do a better "handshaking" than what it is now. If you want to know more about it, please read the next paragraph, otherwise go to the next question.

The issue on hand is that most SMTP servers, the computers that does the sending part of your e-mails, have implemented authentication of e-mail sender, and once it is authenticated, there is no checking on the actual data transmitted afterwards. For example, when connecting to your SMTP server, the e-mail program should send only the e-mail address of the From part of your e-mail, such as info@jbliss.com. Once the server accepts the sender, the subsequent transmission of the From part of your e-mail can be anything that you want it to be and the server does not check it until the next time another e-mail is ready to be sent out. And that is how both Netscape and Outlook do it, when comes to the actual transmitting of the e-mail, the From part of your e-mail is sent as you wanted it to be, ie. Marie Ann pioneer@sosinet.net.

Q. How do I copy from Memo to e-mail?

There are two ways to do it:

1. Copy memo from the memo list : copy the entire content of memo.

2. Copy memo from inside the memo editor : copy entire or selected block
of memo text.

The following are the details about the above two methods:

The first method, Copy entire memo from the memo list:

From the Home Screen,

1. Press 9 for More

2. Press 3 for Library

3. Press 1 for Memo List

4. Use 4 and 6 keys to highlight desired memo from the list

5. Press Ctrl + C keys to copy memo to Windows Clipboard

6. Go to e-mail editor (we left the steps out on how to go to e-mail Editor.)

7. Press Ctrl + V keys to paste memo to e-mail Editor

The second method, Copy selected content from within the memo editor.

From the Home Screen,

1. Press 9 for more

2. Press 3 for library

3. Press 1 for Memo List

4. Use 4 and 6 keys to highlight desired memo from the list

5. Press Ctrl + Enter keys to open the memo in memo editor

10. Press Ctrl + V keys to paste selected text to e-mail editor

Q. How do I edit or correct e-mail & re-send it?

This is the part that I like about the e-mail of VIP. With situation like the above, all you need to do is to select the returned e-mail and press Ctrl + Enter keys to edit it. While in the editor, fix the problem and save it. The corrected e-mail will be saved to the OUTBOX and ready to be sent out again.

Copying e-mail with cut & paste windows commands. This is about cut and paste with VIP e-mail. The same methods apply to MEMO as well.

5. Hold down Shift key and use Arrow keys to highlight to the end of the block of text that you want to copy.

6. Press Ctrl + C keys to copy highlighted text to Windows clipboard.

7. Exit e-mail editor by pressing Alt + 8 keys and then 3 key.

8. Press Enter key to start a new e-mail.

9. Use Down Arrow key to move cursor to the content area.

10. Press Ctrl + V keys to paste text from the clipboard to the new e-mail.

You can use the same procedure to copy text from e-mail to memo, memo to e-mail, or other
Windows application etc. Please note that the above described methods apply only to the
content of e-mail, not the To, CC, and Subject fields of e-mail.

Q. How do I save my e-mail to a floppy disk?

1. Select the desired e-mail from the e-mail list screen.

2. Press the 3 key for View.

3. Press Ctrl-S to save the email to a memo file.

4. Press F11 to go to the Memo List screen with the desired e-mail highlighted.

5. Press Ctrl-S then 1 to save the memo to floppy.

Q. Is there a shortcut key I can use to go directly to the Memo?

Press the F11 key to go from a View to the Memo list (only works in version 2.6 and above). In version 2.5 or below you need to press Home, More, Library, then Memo.

Q. How do I put scanned data into e-mail?

The procedure involves first saving the scanned resume to the Memo, then copying it to the Clipboard, then pasting it into an e-mail. Remember that the resume won't be formatted, but e-mail isn't formatted anyway. The steps are:

1. Scan the resume and go to either Marquee, RSVP, or Word Wrap Views.

2. From any of these three Views, press Ctrl-S to save the resume in Memo.

3. For Version 2.6, press F11 to go to the Memo List. For earlier versions press Home, More, Library, Memo to go to the Memo List.

4. Press Ctrl-A to select all of the text in the resume.

5. Press Ctrl-C to copy the selected text to the Clipboard.

6. Press F12 to go to e-mail.

7. Press Enter to open a new e-mail, then input the address and subject.

8. With the cursor in the message area, press Ctrl-V to paste the resume text into the e-mail.

9. Send the e-mail in the normal way.

Q. Can I just install the same version of VIP, in this case version 2.0, without un-installing it first?

As a rule of thumb, always un-install the VIP first and then re-install it from the CD.

In rare occasions, not only do you need to un-install the VIP with its automatic un-install program, but you also need to manually delete the following directories,

C:\Program Files\VIP\

C:\Program Files\Watson2.1

C:\Program Files\Borland

As to when do you need to delete the above directories manually, it really depends and every situation is different. If you have tried the automatic un-install and re-installed the program from the original CD and it still does work, then you might have to delete the above mentioned directories manually. Please call us if you think you might need to do it.

Q. A good use of the list serve is for users to give tips about things they have discovered about VIP. Below is an example. How about you sending us your favorite tip?

If you are reading a page in one of the OCR Views (i.e., Marquee, RSVP, or Word Wrap), and your press the "Print Screen" key, you will be able to print out that page (not the screen but the page) word wrapped in any size you want. But what if you want to print our several pages all at once?

You can do this by going to the Library Document Pick List, selecting the multiple page document that you want to print, and press Control S. This command stores all of the pages of the document in one Memo file. In version 2.6, you can press F11 and immediately go to the Memo List. (For versions 2.1 to 2.5, you need to press Home, More, Library, and Memo to go to the Memo List.) At this point you can edit the Memo if you want, or you can press View and go to one of the OCR Views. Then pressing "Print Screen" will allow you to print all of the pages of the document at one time.

Q. How do I filter to avoid hearing unwanted characters?

Have you tried using the character filters in VIP? This feature was put in VIP specifically to keep characters from being spoken that you don't want to hear. See pages 112-113 of the version 2.5 manual.

(Text Follows...)
Here is what is on Pages 112-113 of the version 2.5 manual regarding Character Filters:

When reading, you will sometimes hear punctuation or other characters being read that you don't want to hear (such as quotation marks, parentheses, etc.). If you wish, you can turn on a "filter" to remove those characters before they are spoken.

Changing this setting will require the assistance of a sighted person or the use of screen-reading software.

To turn on the speech character filter press F5 from the Home screen to go to the Advanced Setup screen. Click on the tab labeled "Speed Configuration" (see Figure 70). To turn on the filter, click the checkbox labeled "Enable Speech Character Filter". If you do not want to change which characters are filtered, click the OK button to go back to VIP. By default, the filter will not remove any normal punctuation, numbers, or non-accented letters. To change which characters are filtered, click the button labeled "Fltr Setup". you will see the box shown in Figure 71.

Characters that will be left in the text are shown in black, while those to be removed are in gray. Simply click on any character to add or remove it. If you want to save your changes, click the Save button. When you are done, click OK to go back to the Speed Configuration screen, then click OK again to return to VIP.

Q. How do I append a document with newly scanned material?

If you wish, you can add a new bulk scan to the end of an existing document (for example, if you are scanning a document with many pages, I recommend that you scan the first page several times to get the optimum threshold, then save this page in the Library, then scan the next 20, and append them to the end of the file which contains the first page, then scan the next 20 and append them to the end of this file, etc. This protects you from losing a lot of pages if there is a power failure, computer crash, etc.). To append a scan to an existing file, simply press APPEND (key "7") after you have scanned and pressed DONE (key "3"). The Library List screen will then appear, and you need to select (with the "4" and "6" keys) the document that you want the scan to be appended to. Then press APPEND (key "3") again.

Q. How can I print pictures saved in VIP?

1. Select the desired picture.

2. Press the 3 key to View.

3. Adjust the magnification and position.

4. Press the Print Screen key to print.

Q. Where are the manuals in VIP?

All three manuals, VIP, VIP Browser, and ezVIP are located in the list of documents under CD, Demo Etexts. From the Home Screen, press 9 for More, and 7 for CD. Then if demo EText is not selected, press 7 to Change CD, then use the 4 and 6 keys to highlight demo Etext, and press 3 to View. Now select the manual you want, VIP, VIP Browser, or ezVIP and press 3 again to View it.

Viewing Diagrams Or Equations Within A Page Of Text

Here is a suggestion for dealing with small diagrams or equations on a page in which there is also text.

First set up Image View as follows: Press 9 to get Image View Page View mode.

Now go to your normal reading mode (i.e., Word Wrap, Marquee, or RSVP) and begin reading as usual. When you come to a diagram or equation, press the key above the 8 (if you have our labels, it has a vertical line on it). This takes you to the same location in Image View with a magnified view of the picture that the scanner received. You can move around with the mouse.

Press the key above the 8 again to return to the text view for resuming reading the text.

Q. How do I set VIP Reading Columns?

From the Home screen, press 1 for scan, then 7 for Opts. Now 3 toggles between Cols On and Cols Off. For most documents Cols On is used, which means that VIP will read down one column, then the next, and so on. However, for documents in which you want to read across rows, such as tables and statements, use Cols Off.

Q. I keep getting the message Again, that VIP works best at 640 x 480 resolution. I had it fixed once, but now the message has come up again and I can't remember
which window I went in to fix it. Can someone help me?

This message is caused by your screen size being larger than 640 x 480 resolution. To get rid of this message, you need to change your screen size back down to 640 x 480. This can be done by:

Click on the Windows "Start" button or press the Windows button (Located between the CTRL and ALT at the bottom left corner of the keyboard).

Click on Settings then the Control Panel or press the "S" key for Settings and then press the ENTER key for the Control Panel.

Double click on Display or press the "D" key until Display is highlighted (usually two or three press) and then press the ENTER key.

Click on the "Settings" Tab or hold down the CTRL key and press the TAB key until the "Settings" Tab is selected (usually 4 to 5 presses of the TAB key while holding down the CTRL key will select the "Settings" Tab).

Look for "Screen area" and click on the horizontal sliding bar located between Less and More on the screen or press the TAB key once.

Move the horizontal sliding bar by either clicking and holding down on it and move your mouse toward the left toward Less or press the LEFT ARROW key once.

Finally, click the OK button or press the ENTER key.

The computer may ask you to reboot, if so, just click OK or press ENTER to
reboot the computer.

Q. How do I delete documents?

Are you trying to delete documents in Windows or VIP? For Windows, simply find the document you want to delete and then click on the document to highlight it and press the DELETE key on the keyboard to delete the document.

For the VIP program, you need to be in the picklist, highlight or select the document by using the "4" (-) key or the "6" (+) key and then press the key below the "3" key labeled "D" on the keypad. You will be prompted by VIP to confirm file deletion. You can delete any document or file from the VIP MEMO, Email, or Library. Some items in the Library, such as Alice in Wonderland, is mark read only by VIP and cannot be deleted.

Q. Can anyone tell me how many photos will fit in the picture album and also, if you delete a photo, how do you insert another one in its place?

The number of pictures that you can put in the picture album depends on the size of your hard disk and how much other stuff you have stored there. An 8-by-10 color picture takes about 25 MB of space and smaller pictures take proportionally less space. Most PCs today have hard disks with at least 4000 MB of space. You can check on how much space you have left by opening My Computer from the Desktop, selecting the hard disk drive, right clicking on the mouse, and left clicking on properties.

To delete a picture, center it in the photo album pick screen with the 4 and 6 keys, then press the key below the 3 on the number pad.

Q. If you run out of space can you transfer the ones already in there to a storage place?

Yes, but you will have to use some Windows file handling procedures to do this.

Q. I have been practicing from your instructions on how to cut, copy and paste and so far I am doing pretty well. One thing I'd like to know. Once you get the copy into the memo, can you transfer that info to another email by the same method or can you transfer directly from one email to another without going through the memo? It seems logical, but I'm afraid to try.

The copy, cut, and paste procedures should work memo to/from email, email to email, and email or memo to other programs that use the clipboard.

PnC Net Questions & Answers

Q. What is an example of what I can do on the Internet?

There are several web sites that attempt to do just about everything (e.g., msn, netscape, yahoo, etc.). We have included two of these in the default Favorites List: msn and yahoo. My favorite is msn, which includes links for searching, today's news, maps, e-mail, shopping, stock and money, air tickets, games, health, etc. You can personalize the msn web site so it knows which stocks you wish to track, provides you news on these stocks, gives the weather for your location, etc. E-mail on the msn web site is called Hotmail, and if you sign up for a Hotmail account, PnC Net will enlarge and read your e-mail.

Q. How can I get information about a group of stocks on a periodic basis?

Getting stock quotes from the Internet can be done on many web sites. But what is most convenient is to be able to store a list of stocks you want track, have the web site remember the list, and be able to get up to date quotes, news, and other information quickly. This can be done on many sites, especially broker sites such as Charles Schwab, but you need to have an account with the broker. However, msn.com is a site that works well and isn't a broker, so no account is needed. (You do need to fill out a simple form to register, but once you are set up, it is very quick and easy to get lots of information about your stocks.)

The msn site allows you to personalize a web page, called My MSN, with your own list of stocks. Then every time you download My MSN, it displays a table showing the latest quotes for the stocks in your list, amount of change, and the volume. Here are some simple steps.

1. PnC Net's default Favorites list includes msn.com. Select this Favorite, or type "msn.com" in the Address test box and download the web site.
2. Enable PnC Net's Link List by pressing F7. Next select the MY MSN link by pressing the Tab key three times to go to the third Link. Press the Enter key to down load this Link.
3. If you haven't registered click on the Button "Register", or press the tab key 10 times to select the tenth Link on the page, which is named "Get one now" and press the Enter key. Fill out the form that comes up and click on the Button "I Agree" to the terms.
4. Click on the Button "Continue". Then go to My MSN by pressing the tab key 7 times and pressing the Enter key, or by clicking on the My MSN Link.
5. Now to store the list of ticker symbols for the stock you wish to track click on the Link "Add your own symbols". You can find this link by pressing the Esc key, then selecting Find and typing in the word "Symbols" and pressing the Enter key. This will highlight the word symbols in the Link. Press the Tab key once, then the Enter key.
6. Type the list of ticker symbols for the stocks you wish to track in the text box.
7. Click on the "Update My MSN" button. Now that the hard part is done, in the future it will be easy to get the information about your stocks.

Now you are at the My MSN page. Near the bottom is a table with the latest information about the stocks in your list. You can go directly to this table by using the PnC Net Find function to find the ticker symbol for the first stock in your list. Press the Pause/Break key to have the table read aloud to you.

Each of the ticker symbols in the table is a Link. Going to one of these Links allows you to get the latest news about this stock, the Stock Scouter Rating, etc.

Q. What are some ways I can get recipes from the Internet?

Example 1. I often listen to KCBS on the radio and sometimes Narsai David gives a recipe that sounds interesting. However I am usually not in a position to write it down or remember it. But you can use PnC Net to get a copy by going to:

http://www.kcbs.com/pages/kcbs/external/narsai/recipes/index.nsp

It is convenient to turn on PnC Net's Link List feature. Then you can tab through the list of Links to the recipes, or if you are looking for a recipe with a certain main ingredient, you can use PnC Net's Find function to go to directly to the Link to that recipe.

Example 2. Getting a recipe for Ribs from Oprah.com using PnC Net

PnC Net contains many tools to cope with the complexity of web sites. There are also several alternative ways to do most things, so if one doesn't work well for you, there may be another way to achieve the same result. As an example, below are the steps for getting a recipe for cooking ribs from the Oprah web site that illustrate alternative methods for some of the steps:

1. From the Home menu, select Address. (If Address isn't already highlighted, move up the list until it is. You can move up or down the list with the mouse or arrow keys. Alternatively you can go to Address by typing "A", the first letter of Address. After Address is highlighted, you can select it by pressing the Enter key, Left Arrow key, or the Left Mouse button)
2. Type in Oprah.com. Press Enter.
3. After the Oprah web site is down loaded (be sure to wait until it is completely finished), press the F10 key until the zoom mode is "Enlarge All". If you need to change the amount of enlargement, hold down the Alt key and press the plus or minus keys (VIP labels > or <) to increase or decrease the enlargement.
4. Hold down the right arrow key until the Search text box comes into view. Type in "Ribs" and press the Enter key.
5. Wait until PnC Net says "Finish loading search results." On this web page are a list of Links to various recipes for Ribs, the first of which is by Quincy Jones. There are a number of alternative ways to move around this web page and select the Link to the first Quincy Jones recipe.

a) Use the Arrow keys - Press the Down Arrow key to move down and the Right Arrow key to move to the right if needed until the Link "Quincy Jones' Ribs" comes into view. Use the mouse to place the pointer on this Link and click the left mouse button.
b) Use the Page Down and Right Arrow key - Press the Page Down key and then press the Right Arrow key if needed to move until the Link "Quincy Jones' Ribs" comes into view. Use the mouse to place the pointer on this Link and click the left mouse button.
c) Use the mouse or track ball - Move the mouse point all the way to the right edge of the screen to scroll the page to the right and to the bottom edge of the screen to scroll down to move until the Link "Quincy Jones' Ribs" comes into view. Use the mouse to place the pointer on this Link and click the left mouse button.
d) Use the scroll bars - place the mouse pointer on the scroll bar at the right edge of the page, then hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse down to move down the page, then place the mouse pointer on the scroll bar at the bottom of the page and hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse to the right to move the page to the right if needed, until the Link "Quincy Jones' Ribs" comes into view. Q. Can I use PnC Net for email?

PnC Net and web based e-mail can provide a fully featured email function together with enlargement and speech.

There are many ways to use PnC Net to send and receive e-mail. One web site for e-mail that we have found to have some nice features and to work well with PnC Net is WebBox. WebBox costs $10 a year, but we think it is worth it. Following are some features of WebBox:

1. You don't have to change your current e-mail address as long as your current e-mail service uses a POP3 server.
2. You will be able to read e-mail with embedded graphics.
3. You will be able to send/receive attachments.
4. You can consolidate up to 5 e-mail accounts into one place.
5. You can store up to 20 megabytes of documents, pictures, etc.
6. You can maintain addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc.
7. There is a consolidated search feature.

If you decide to use WebBox, contact us and we can tell you how you can set up a Favorite in PnC Net so that you don't have to type in your User ID and Password every time you access your e-mail.

For those of you who are using Earthlink for your email and wanting more e-mail functions than VIP email offers, you might try doing your email with PnC Net. The steps are:

1. Launch PnC Net and select Address at the Home menu.
2. Type "webmail.earthlink.net" into the text box and press the Enter key.
3. Find the text boxes for your email address and password and type them in. Then press the Enter key.
4. The next screen show a list of emails in your inbox and gives you links for a full set of email functions.

Q. Can I access my library from the Internet?

Recently we have been working with some libraries to help their low vision patrons get access to library services using PnC Net. Today most libraries have great web sites that provide access to tons of information about almost anything. Lots of information is available without a library card, but usually you need a library card to access the card catalog, reserve and check out books. Often you can get the information you need without going to the library. If you have a library card, you can find out if they have a book you want and put a hold on it until you can go to the library and pick it up.

For an example of what you can do without a library card, go to http://www-lib.co.santa-clara.ca.us. This is the address of libraries in Santa Clara County, California. The home page has Links to Reading Lists, Catalog, "Find it on the Web", Databases and Research Tools, Services, and "About the Library". Under Databases you have a choice of the following Links: Business, Encyclopedias, Health, Literature, Newspapers and Magazines, Science, Student Resources, and More.

If you select the Business Link, you get some Text Boxes that let you search for information about a company of your choice. I typed in INVN, that is the symbol of Invision Technologies, a local small company that makes luggage scanners for airports. Since 9/11their stock has gone up 10 times. I first got a company profile, then looked at the Links that gave their Financials, stock performance chart, insider trading, and reports from several analysts.

Q. What are some examples of getting medical information from the Internet?

There is growing evidence that diet and supplements can slow or stop the progression of macular degeneration. The August 2002 issue of the Wellness Letter published by the University of California reports on a major study (AREDS) that tested Bausch & Lomb's Ocuvite PreserVision supplements. The findings were encouraging. You can read the article by going to www.wellnessletter.com.

The October Issue of the Wellness Letter suggests the American Optometric Association: web site www.aoa.org/EyeOnNutrition determining if you have an eye-healty diet. Other related web sites are:

Another good web site for medical information is www.healthatoz.com. It is especially good for finding out about drug interactions. However, finding the Link to the Drug Guide with PnC Net is a little tricky. Following is the easiest way I found:

1. From the PnC Net Home Menu, select Address and type in www.healthatoz.com then press the Enter key.
2. After the web site is downloaded, press the Esc key and select Find from the Home Menu.
3. Type in the word "Click" and press the Enter key.
4. After the word "Click" is highlighted on the web page, press the Tab key. The hold down the Shift key and press the Tab key again. Press the Enter key.
5. After the Drug Guide page is downloaded you can either click on the link for the first letter of the drug you want, then select it from the list, or type the name of the drug into the Text box.
6. Then you will need to click on the "I agree" button on the disclaimer page.
7. Then the information about the drug will be downloaded. Enlarge All in PnC Net works best here.
